A complete step-by-step guide to preparing for your root canal — from consultation to recovery. Reduce anxiety, know what to expect, and ensure the best outcome.
Root canal treatment has an undeserved reputation for being painful and frightening. The reality is quite different — modern root canals are virtually painless, highly successful, and often completed in a single visit. Proper preparation reduces anxiety, ensures smooth recovery, and maximises the long-term success of your treated tooth. This guide walks you through everything you need to know before, during, and after your root canal treatment.
Book an appointment with an endodontist or dentist experienced in root canal treatment. During the consultation, they will take digital X-rays to assess the extent of infection, examine the tooth structure, and determine if root canal treatment is the best option. Ask about the number of visits required, anaesthesia options, and any pre-existing conditions they should know about.

Modern root canal treatment is virtually painless due to advanced anaesthesia and rotary instruments. Ask your dentist to explain each step: access opening, pulp removal, canal cleaning and shaping, disinfection, and sealing. Knowing what to expect significantly reduces anxiety. If you are nervous, discuss sedation options like nitrous oxide or oral sedatives.
Eat a light meal 1–2 hours before your appointment unless instructed otherwise. Take any prescribed pre-medication (antibiotics) as directed. Arrange transportation if you will be receiving sedation. Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before the procedure. Wear comfortable clothing and avoid heavy makeup or jewellery around the face and neck area.
Schedule the rest of your day off work if possible. Stock up on soft foods: yoghurt, soup, mashed potatoes, smoothies. Purchase over-the-counter pain relief (paracetamol/ibuprofen) if not prescribed. Arrange for someone to drive you home if you received sedation. Do not plan strenuous activities for 24–48 hours after the procedure.
Avoid chewing on the treated side until the permanent crown is placed. Take prescribed antibiotics and pain medication as directed. Use cold compresses for swelling in the first 24 hours. Rinse gently with warm salt water after 24 hours. Attend your follow-up appointment for crown placement — this is essential for long-term success.
