Frequently Asked Questions

Comprehensive answers to the most common questions about dental and aesthetic treatments in Gurgaon. Direct, honest information from Dr Sameera Dawar, MDS Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon.

Root Canal Treatment

What is root canal treatment and when do I need it?

Root canal treatment is a dental procedure that removes infected or damaged pulp from inside your tooth, then cleans, disinfects and seals the space. You need it when the tooth pulp becomes infected due to deep decay, repeated dental procedures, cracked teeth or trauma. Symptoms include severe toothache, prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold, darkening of the tooth, swelling and tenderness in nearby gums, or a persistent pimple on the gums.

Is root canal treatment painful?

Modern root canal treatment is virtually painless. Local anaesthesia completely numbs the area, and advanced rotary endodontic instruments make the procedure faster and more comfortable than ever. Most patients report that a root canal feels no different from getting a filling. The pain people associate with root canals is actually the pain of the untreated infection, not the treatment itself.

How long does a root canal take and how many visits are needed?

Most root canals can be completed in a single 60–90 minute visit using modern rotary endodontic technology. Complex cases with multiple canals or severe infection may require two appointments. At Ageless Smile & Aesthetics in Gurgaon, Dr Sameera Dawar uses advanced digital imaging and rotary instruments to complete most root canals efficiently in one visit.

What happens if I delay root canal treatment?

Delaying root canal treatment allows the infection to spread, leading to abscess formation, bone loss around the tooth root, and eventual tooth loss. The infection can also spread to surrounding tissues, causing facial swelling and systemic health risks. Early treatment is always easier, less expensive, and more likely to save your natural tooth.

Wisdom Tooth Removal

When should wisdom teeth be removed?

Wisdom teeth should be removed when they are impacted (unable to fully emerge), causing pain or infection, damaging adjacent teeth, causing crowding or misalignment, forming cysts, or showing signs of decay that cannot be properly treated. The ideal age for removal is late teens to early 20s, when roots are less developed and recovery is faster.

Is wisdom tooth removal a major surgery?

Wisdom tooth removal ranges from simple extraction to minor oral surgery depending on impaction level. Fully erupted wisdom teeth are removed like any other tooth. Impacted wisdom teeth require a surgical approach where gum tissue is opened and bone may be removed to access the tooth. As an Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon, Dr Sameera Dawar handles even complex impacted cases with precision and safety.

How long is recovery after wisdom tooth removal?

Most patients recover within 3–7 days. The first 24 hours require rest and ice packs. Days 2–3 typically show peak swelling which then subsides. By day 7, most normal activities can resume. Complete healing of the socket takes 3–4 weeks. Following post-operative instructions carefully — especially avoiding smoking and straws — prevents complications like dry socket.

What is dry socket and how can I prevent it?

Dry socket (alveolar osteitis) occurs when the blood clot protecting the healing socket dislodges, exposing bone and nerves. It causes severe pain 2–3 days after extraction. Prevent it by avoiding smoking, straws, spitting, and vigorous rinsing for 72 hours after surgery. Stick to soft foods and follow all aftercare instructions provided by your surgeon.

Dental Implants

What is a dental implant and how does it work?

A dental implant is a titanium post surgically placed into your jawbone to replace a missing tooth root. Over 3–6 months, the implant fuses with the bone through osseointegration, creating a permanent foundation. A custom crown is then attached, completing a tooth that looks, feels and functions like a natural tooth. Unlike bridges, implants do not damage adjacent teeth and prevent bone loss.

Who is a good candidate for dental implants?

Good candidates have healthy gums, adequate jawbone density to support the implant, good general health without uncontrolled chronic conditions, and commitment to oral hygiene. Even if you have been told you lack sufficient bone, bone grafting techniques may still make implants possible. Smokers can get implants but must quit during the healing period for best success rates.

How long do dental implants last?

With proper care and regular dental check-ups, the implant itself can last a lifetime. The crown attached to it may need replacement after 15–20 years due to normal wear. Dental implants have a 95–98% success rate when placed by experienced practitioners and properly maintained by patients.

Are dental implants better than bridges or dentures?

For most patients with adequate bone, implants are the superior long-term solution. They preserve jawbone, do not require damaging adjacent teeth, look and function most like natural teeth, and can last a lifetime. Bridges require filing down healthy adjacent teeth and typically last 10–15 years. Dentures accelerate bone loss and affect eating and speech.

Botox & Fillers

What is Botox and how does it work?

Botox (botulinum toxin type A) is a purified protein that temporarily relaxes specific muscles responsible for dynamic wrinkles — lines formed by repeated facial expressions like frowning and squinting. It blocks nerve signals to muscles, preventing contraction and allowing wrinkles to soften. Results appear within 3–5 days and last 3–4 months. It does not freeze your entire face when administered correctly.

What are dermal fillers and what do they treat?

Dermal fillers are gel-like substances (typically hyaluronic acid) injected beneath the skin to restore lost volume, smooth lines, soften creases, and enhance facial contours. They treat nasolabial folds, marionette lines, thin lips, hollow cheeks, under-eye hollows, and jawline definition. Results are immediate and last 9–18 months depending on the product and treatment area.

Does Botox hurt and is there downtime?

Botox involves minimal discomfort — most patients describe a slight pinch. The procedure takes 15–20 minutes and requires no anaesthesia, though topical numbing cream can be applied. There is no downtime. You can return to normal activities immediately, though you should avoid lying down for 4 hours, strenuous exercise for 24 hours, and touching the treated area.

Who should administer Botox and fillers?

Only qualified medical professionals with specific training in facial anatomy should administer injectables. In India, this includes doctors, dentists with aesthetic training, and registered nurses under medical supervision. Choosing an injector based on price alone is dangerous. Complications like vascular occlusion, though rare, require immediate medical management only a trained professional can provide.

PRP & Skin Treatments

What is PRP therapy and how does it work for hair and skin?

PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) therapy uses your own blood's concentrated platelets, which contain growth factors that stimulate cell regeneration and collagen production. For hair, PRP reactivates dormant follicles and prolongs the growth phase. For skin, it improves texture, reduces fine lines, and accelerates healing. Blood is drawn, centrifuged to concentrate platelets, and the PRP is injected or applied with microneedling.

How many PRP sessions are needed for hair fall?

Most patients require an initial course of 3–4 PRP sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart for significant improvement. Maintenance sessions every 4–6 months help sustain results. Hair regrowth is gradual — reduced shedding is typically noticed within 4–6 weeks, with visible new growth appearing by months 3–4. Consistency is essential for optimal outcomes.

Is PRP therapy safe and are there side effects?

PRP is extremely safe because it uses your own blood, eliminating risk of allergic reaction or disease transmission. Side effects are minimal and temporary — mild redness, slight swelling, and possible bruising at injection sites resolve within 24–48 hours. As with any injection, there is minimal risk of infection, which is why sterile technique by a medical professional is essential.

What is the difference between PRP for hair and PRP facial?

PRP hair treatment involves injecting PRP directly into the scalp at the level of hair follicles to stimulate growth. PRP facial (often called vampire facial) combines PRP with microneedling — the PRP is applied to the skin surface after microneedling creates micro-channels, allowing deeper penetration. Both use the same PRP preparation but different application methods for different goals.
